A freund sounds like a companion with a complex. A complex companion. Especially in the light of our recent findings, and the shelf of course. Life is dramatically different. It differs altogether from all known unknowns. It has character. It seems cognant, and it reminds me of something I used to own. It wasn't really ever mine, but I had it. Like aids. Or aides. Or Hades. I'm sleepy...
What I wanted to say was: Although life is dramatically different, it seems vaguely familiar. Vaguely different and dramatically familiar would also do for me, if that works better for you.
